Session 17 – 1 & 2 Chronicles

This study, taught by Pastor Barry Forder, is an overview of 1 & 2 Chronicles and was our 17th session in our Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year series, recorded during 2014 as part of our Sunday morning family services.

Whereas 1 & 2 Kings focus primarily on the events in the northern kingdom of Israel, 1 & 2 Chronicles are written from the perspective of the southern kingdom of Judah. Of the northern kingdom of Israel’s 20 kings, there was not a single good king who followed the LORD. Although the record of the southern kingdom of Judah was not much better. Out of the 19 kings and 1 queen there were 5 kings who ‘did that which was right in the sight of the LORD’. These stand out because of the dismal failure of those around them. In a similar way, Christians today are called to shine as lights in this world. There are many lessons for us to learn in these books of Israel’s history that still speak powerfully to us today.

1 Chronicles begins by tracing Israel’s history all the way from Adam, and 2 Chronicles ends with the decree of the Persian king Cyrus allowing the Jews to return home to Israel after the Babylonian Captivity in 537 B.C.

May this overview prompt you to undertake your own study of these divinely inspired books.
