Genesis Chapter 11

This teaching is our 13th session in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Genesis by pastor Barry – given as part of our family service on 21st May 2017.

In this study, we look at one of the pivotal events in history – the Tower of Babel.

After the flood, the families of Shem, Ham and Japheth traveled west and settled in the area of modern-day Iraq, on the plain of Shinar. From what the Bible reveals and from historical accounts, the grandson of Noah, Cush, led the people in rebelling against God and building a huge tower for two reasons: firstly, to act as a landmark to try to keep from spreading out around the world (contrary to God’s command); secondly, to be used as an astrological viewing platform. Cush’s son, Nimrod founded Babel and established the first world government (Gen 10:10), but Cush himself seems to have been the ringleader behind this rebellion.

One might easily ask how man could so quickly depart from the worship of God to follow after idols? And, why did these ancient cultures have such a fascination with the planets etc?

In this study we look at some compelling conjectures that may have been the reason for both the tower of Babel and the ‘high places’ that we read so much about in the Old Testament.

We also note that from this, almost all false religion has come, including astrology and the corruption of the Hebrew Mazaroth, which may well have once told the gospel story in the stars, but now, since Babel, has become the distorted into the Zodiac.

We will see that, when we look at history through the lens of scripture, there is incredible clarity and so much of history then makes sense!

You can listen to the audio on this web page, or save it for listening to later.  We have also made available the Powerpoint slides (in PDF format) that outline the key points of this study.

We hope and pray this teaching will bless you and encourage you to undertake your own personal study and adventure in God’s Word!
